Male pattern hair loss is driven by a hormone acting on follicles that are genetically sensitive to it. Treatment targets the hormone, not the hair.
An enzyme converts testosterone
5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone — DHT — throughout the body, including the scalp.
DHT miniaturises the follicle
In follicles that are genetically susceptible, DHT shortens each growth cycle. The follicle produces a finer, shorter hair each time around.
The conversion is inhibited
Finasteride inhibits that enzyme, lowering DHT and easing the pressure that drives miniaturisation.
Which is why timing matters
Treatment defends follicles that are still cycling. It cannot bring back a follicle that has stopped — so the earlier a provider reviews it, the more there is to work with.
