Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. It is the same molecule as Zepbound, and providers sometimes prescribe it off-label for weight management where they judge it appropriate.
Mounjaro is tirzepatide — the dual GLP-1/GIP mechanism described on the Zepbound page. Approved for type 2 diabetes; the weight-management indication belongs to Zepbound. Chemically they are the same medication.

A provider may consider it when
- You have type 2 diabetes and weight is part of the picture — its approved use
- Your provider judges the off-label use appropriate for your situation
Reasons it may not be prescribed
- Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or MEN 2 syndrome — this is a hard stop
- Pregnancy, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- A history of pancreatitis, without careful provider review
- Type 1 diabetes, gastroparesis, or an active eating disorder without in-person care
These are the same checks your provider runs in the visit. If one applies, they will tell you plainly — and the medication portion of what you paid comes back automatically.
Important safety information
As with Zepbound: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, mostly around dose increases; uncommon but serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder disease, plus the class boxed warning on thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents.

Mounjaro or Zepbound — what's the difference?
The same medication with two labels: Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes, Zepbound for weight management. If weight is the goal, Zepbound is the on-label route; your provider and your coverage decide what makes sense.
