Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, alongside diet and activity.
Wegovy is semaglutide: a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the fullness hormone your intestine releases after eating. It keeps that signal arriving between meals and slows stomach emptying, so smaller meals satisfy. As the manufacturer's finished, FDA-approved product, every pen is produced and tested under FDA oversight. A compounded drug is a different product that the FDA has not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Reasons it may not be prescribed
- Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or MEN 2 syndrome — this is a hard stop
- Pregnancy, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- A history of pancreatitis, without careful provider review
- Type 1 diabetes, gastroparesis, or an active eating disorder without in-person care

Important safety information
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and reflux are the common ones, usually worst after a dose increase. Serious but uncommon risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and kidney injury from dehydration. The boxed warning covers thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. How is this different from compounded semaglutide?
They are different products. Wegovy is the manufacturer's FDA-approved, dose-verified pen. Compounded semaglutide is prepared by a pharmacy, is not FDA-approved, and has not been reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality. Your provider can discuss both honestly.
