Wegovy is semaglutide: a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the fullness hormone your intestine releases after eating. It keeps that signal arriving between meals and slows stomach emptying, so smaller meals satisfy. Weeks 1–4
The 0.25mg starting dose exists to let your gut adapt — meaningful appetite effects usually arrive with the later steps.
Months 1–4
The dose steps up on a set schedule (0.25 → 0.5 → 1 → 1.7 → 2.4mg weekly), with your provider checking tolerance at each stage.
Ongoing
This is managed as an ongoing condition. Stopping generally means the appetite effects stop too — plan that with your provider, not around them.

Side effects, before you decide
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and reflux are the common ones, usually worst after a dose increase. Serious but uncommon risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and kidney injury from dehydration. The boxed warning covers thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents.
