The gap between retinol and tretinoin
Over-the-counter retinol must be converted by your skin — through multiple steps — into retinoic acid before it does anything. Tretinoin is retinoic acid. That's why it's prescription-strength: it acts directly on skin-cell turnover and collagen production, with decades of clinical use in acne and photoaging behind it.
The purge, explained honestly
In the first weeks, tretinoin accelerates turnover so brewing congestion surfaces faster — skin can look worse before it looks better, alongside dryness and flaking. This is expected, usually temporary, and manageable with the ramp-up schedule your provider sets. Quitting in week three is the most common way to fail with a medication that was working.
Sunscreen is part of the prescription
Tretinoin increases sun sensitivity, and unprotected UV exposure undoes the collagen work you're paying for. Daily SPF isn't a suggestion attached to treatment — it's half the treatment.
When it's not the answer
Pregnancy rules out retinoids entirely. New or changing rashes, moles, or spots are diagnosis questions for in-person dermatology, not skincare questions — our intake screens for both and says so.
