How it works
FDA-approved for pattern hair loss. Prescribed by a licensed provider only if appropriate for you.
Minoxidil opens potassium channels and widens blood vessels in the scalp, and it lengthens the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, so hairs spend longer growing before they shed. It works on the follicle's timing rather than on the hormone driving the loss — which is why providers often pair it with finasteride, since the two act on different parts of the same problem. A low oral dose exists too, but because minoxidil began life as a blood-pressure medication, the oral form is a provider's decision after a heart and blood-pressure review.

- You can apply it consistently twice a day — consistency is most of it
Reasons it may not be prescribed
- Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy — the label says it may be harmful in pregnancy or while breastfeeding
- Anyone with a scalp condition, irritation or open skin where it would be applied
- Sudden, patchy or unexplained hair loss, which needs a diagnosis first
- Heart disease, without your provider's review — especially if an oral dose is being considered
- Use around pets that may lick treated skin, particularly cats
- Anyone unwilling to accept an initial shedding phase
These are the same checks your provider runs in the visit. If one applies, they will tell you plainly — and the medication portion of what you paid comes back automatically.
What to expect
Weeks 2–8
Shedding is common early and is not the treatment failing — it's follicles cycling out of a resting phase.
Months 3–6
The usual window for assessing whether it's doing anything for you; the over-the-counter label itself tells men to ask a doctor if nothing has changed by four months.
Ongoing
Effect depends on continued use, like finasteride.
Important safety information
Scalp dryness, itching, flaking or irritation are the common ones. Unwanted facial hair growth can happen if the product migrates. Dizziness, a fast heartbeat, chest pain, faintness, sudden weight gain or swelling of the hands or feet are uncommon with the topical form and should be reported — they mean too much is being absorbed.

Questions
Isn't minoxidil sold over the counter?
Yes. Topical minoxidil is an over-the-counter medication at the strengths pharmacies sell, and we say so rather than pretend otherwise. Inside the compounded formula a provider sets the strength and pairs it with other ingredients; if plain over-the-counter minoxidil is all you need, your provider will tell you so.
Will I definitely be prescribed this?
No. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription. A licensed provider reviews your history and your pattern of loss and includes minoxidil only if it is appropriate for you.
Can I use this with finasteride?
They're frequently prescribed together because they act on different parts of the process, and the compounded solution can carry both. Whether the combination is right for you is your provider's decision.
