How it works
FDA-approved micronized progesterone — the body-identical form, not a synthetic progestin.
Estrogen taken alone stimulates the uterine lining, and over time that unopposed stimulation raises endometrial cancer risk. Progesterone is what opposes it — keeping the lining thin, which is why it's non-negotiable alongside estradiol for anyone with a uterus. Micronized progesterone is the body-identical form; taken at night, its metabolites act on the same receptors as the brain's own calming signals, which is why drowsiness is listed as a side effect and experienced as a feature.

- Sleep disruption is among your symptoms — nightly dosing works with that

Reasons it may not be prescribed
- A history of breast cancer or hormone-dependent cancer, without specialist care
- Significant liver disease
- A peanut allergy, for formulations that use peanut oil — flag it and the pharmacy works around it

Important safety information
Drowsiness and dizziness after dosing are the common ones — nightly timing exists for a reason. Breast tenderness and spotting can occur early. Serious risks track those of combined hormone therapy and are part of the same honest conversation.

Questions
Why do I need this if estrogen is what treats the symptoms?
Because estrogen alone stimulates the uterine lining and raises endometrial cancer risk over time. Progesterone protects it. If you've had a hysterectomy, that calculus changes — which is exactly the kind of thing your provider sorts out.
